Sabbath shalom is a familiar Hebrew Sabbath greeting. Shalom, originating in the Old Testament, is defined as a state of wholeness, well-being, and security embodying both the physical and spiritual, and relating not only to the individual, but also to entire communities and relationships among persons.
The New Testament Greek word for shalom is eirene. Eirene is a peace, a binding together, a prevailing sense of quietness and rest in a person’s heart. The Biblical concept of eirene is a tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and entirely content with its earthly lot no matter what that is.
Take a moment to roll these two thoughts around together this Sabbath morning. Shalom. Eirene.
Shabbat Shalom.
